How to Use Blogger Outreach to Skyrocket Your Traffic

And we know there are many ways to get it. But let’s forget social media, SEO or paid ads for a minute and focus on blogger outreach.

What is Blogger Outreach?

It’s all about building relationships. It’s about bloggers coming together to help out one another. It allows you to leverage the traffic of larger, prominent bloggers to boost your own blog. In fact, blogger outreach can be a very powerful marketing tactic.

Sue Anne Dunlevie of Successful Blogging says “Outreach will get you the social shares, readers and engagement that you want and that you need.”

And she should know. She’s managed to grow her blog and increase her traffic by over 300% (dude, that’s not a typo) through blogger outreach.

Through blogger outreach, you can gain:

  • More traffic. By connecting with other bloggers with more traffic, their readers can become your readers.
  • High quality links. What happens when an authority blog links back to your blog? Google sees your blog as relevant and bumps up your own ranking.
  • Deeper connections with influencers. Wouldn’t it be great if you could send an email to one of those blogging superstars about your newest post, and not only have them respond, but share it with their audience? By connecting correctly, you can.
  • A whole new audience. And when those influencers share your stuff, you gain a whole new audience. Many times, this introduces you to people who hadn’t heard of you before. And with the influence of the prominent blogger, this new audience is likely to see you as influential too.

Picking the Right Bloggers

Blogger outreach is about gaining traffic, so you want to make sure you are targeting the right people.

Well you want to start in your niche. Because even if you see them as competition, there audience is your audience.

You also want to make sure the bloggers have a decent following and a good amount of traffic. After all, you want to use their audience to your benefit; and you can’t do that if they don’t have a large audience. Take a look at a bloggers:

  • Topics. Do they cover similar content?
  • Social media networks. How many followers do they have? How often do they post and update?
  • Shares. How many social shares do their posts typically get?
  • Comments. How many comments does each post get? How engaged is their audience?
  • Subscribers. Some sites will tell you how many subscribers they have.
  • Alexa ranking. Calculated from a site’s pageviews and unique visitors, the Alexa ranking will tell you how popular a site is. The lower the number, the better.

How to Connect

Once you’ve picked your bloggers, you want to start connecting.

But not so fast! Keep in mind that a good blogger outreach strategy isn’t an overnight thing. Building relationships that will last long enough to benefit you and the other blogger will take some time and effort.

In order to build a relationship with an influential blogger (especially one who doesn’t know you from Adam) you can:

  • Follow them on social media. Start regularly sharing their posts so they will start to know your name.
  • Comment on their posts. Leave useful comments on their blog posts. Something more substantial than “great blog post!” Point out something you liked in the post to show you actually read it, expand on a point the blogger made, or even politely dispute a point. Make sure your comment provides some sort of value. Not only does this get the blogger’s attention, it gets the attention of other commenters!
  • Mention them in your posts. Mention the blogger and link back to their blog. You can then send them a short email to let them know how much you admire them, and that you mentioned them in your post.
  • Participate actively. How you go about this depends on the blogger and what they offer. Sign up for their newsletter and respond when necessary. Take one of their courses or book a coaching session. Join their Facebook group and actively participate. All these things will get you noticed.
  • Ask them to contribute to a round-up post. Email the blogger stating that you are doing a group post of influential bloggers and would love to include their answer to one, single question. This can be so complimentary that bloggers often oblige.

Blogger outreach is about building relationships with other influential bloggers to build your own traffic and influence. Yes, it takes work, but it’s a traffic-building strategy that works. And once you build that relationship, you have the foundation that you can continue to use.
